New Semiconductor Technology Future of Affordable Thermal Imaging
Thursday, January 11, 2024
Engineers from the University of Texas in Dallas have created a new semiconductor device that creates images using electromagnetic waves at a frequency of 10 terahertz. By using Schottky diodes in Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology for the chip, the new device has the potential to provide more affordable night vision and heat-based imaging for everyday use.
According to Zeshan Ahman, lead author of the project and research assistant at the University’s Texas Analog Center of Excellence (TxACE), there are currently no existing electronic detection systems operating in CMOS that can go above 5 terahertz. “We designed our chip in such a way that it can be mass produced inexpensively, has a smaller pixel and operates at higher frequencies.” he said.
Current night vision and thermal imaging equipment are costly, partly because they are engineered with specialty semiconductor devices or require isolation from the environment. CMOS is used in creating inexpensive consumer electronic products including computers, game consoles, and high-definition televisions. Not only is the technology affordable, but it also allows for smartphone integration.
Possible night time imaging applications for the new device include animal detection, intruder detection and providing light for hiking. The technology can also be used to control heating, air conditioning and light indoors by determining the number of people within a room.
“This technology could provide a very superior means to use the infrared portion of the spectrum,” said Dr. Robert Doering, research strategy manager at Texas Instruments. “Electronic control of generating infrared directly from CMOS integrated circuits will enable a wide variety of important new applications.”
More affordable, higher frequency thermal imaging devices could also mean more advanced and accessible equipment for various clinical and industrial markets.
